ENHANCE Launches Its E-Learning Platform: Two MOOCs to Build Safer and More Inclusive Esports Communities

ENHANCE has reached another important milestone with the launch of its e-learning platform and two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) designed to promote healthier, safer and more socially responsible esports environments.

Developed within Work Package 3, the MOOCs transform ENHANCE research into practical educational resources freely accessible to target audiences. They help players and families understand esports’ social side and offer concrete strategies to recognise, prevent and respond to toxic behaviour.

What are MOOCs?

A Massive Open Online Course is an online learning programme designed for a wide audience and independent study through interactive digital content.

ENHANCE’s MOOCs are available on the new Moodle-based platform at enhance.elearning, developed by Frederick University. Its multilingual resources can be accessed anytime and anywhere by players, parents and educators across Europe.

The courses use micro-learning: every module lasts no more than ten minutes and targets one learning objective. Participants build practical skills through short, engaging activities rather than long theoretical lessons.

Two MOOCs for two audiences

MOOC 1 is designed for grassroots esports players, especially young people aged 16–26. It helps players move from passive witnesses of toxicity to active contributors to respectful communities, developing fair play, communication, inclusion and responsible participation.

The course explores five dimensions:

  • Unsportsmanlike Behaviour
  • Abusive Communication
  • Disruptive Gameplay
  • Discriminatory Behaviour
  • Real-World Invasive Behaviour

Each module explains one form of toxicity, presents realistic scenarios and good practices, and ends with a short assessment.

MOOC 2 is for parents and guardians. It helps adults understand gaming culture, recognise harmful experiences, communicate with young people, encourage healthy habits and positive digital citizenship, and address online safety and privacy.

A practical learning experience

Every ENHANCE learning unit follows the same structure:

  • an introductory presentation;
  • a realistic life scenario or interactive video;
  • an infographic with practical good practices;
  • a short post-assessment quiz.

This consistent format keeps learning concise, engaging and immediately applicable to real gaming situations.

From research to education

The MOOCs draw directly on Work Package 2 research into toxic and prosocial behaviour in European grassroots esports. The project identified abusive communication, disruptive gameplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, discrimination and invasive online behaviour, while also highlighting teamwork, inclusion, leadership, emotional support and community building. These findings form the courses’ scientific foundation.

Reviewed by international experts

Before launch, the MOOCs underwent collaborative review during the Project Meeting and MOOC Training Session at Frederick University in Limassol from 27 to 29 May 2026. Partners and six external expert mentors reviewed all ten draft modules, improving their clarity, educational quality and practical relevance before the pilot phase.

Supporting a healthier esports culture

The platform combines scientific research with accessible education, giving players and families practical tools to recognise toxicity, strengthen respectful communication and promote inclusion. These MOOCs are more than online courses: they advance ENHANCE’s mission to make esports a source of connection, learning and well-being for everyone involved.
